Not a medical device. Not a diagnosis, dose, or listing recommendation.

What it computes

Score the three Cacciola 2013 / VA public-domain BAM subscales (Use, Risk, Protective) from caller-assigned Table 1 prior-30-day items. No single total BAM score.

When to use

When an agent already has Cacciola 2013 Table 1 BAM item values and needs the published Use, Risk, and Protective sums. magent does not interview the patient, invent a total BAM score, or issue a level-of-care order.

When not to use

  • Not a medical device and not a diagnosis of a substance use disorder.
  • Not a level-of-care order. magent does not interview the patient. Each item is caller-assigned from Cacciola 2013 Table 1.
  • Cacciola 2013 and the VA public-domain instrument do not produce a psychometrically refined total BAM score. This tool returns Use, Risk, and Protective only and does not invent named low/high clinical bands.
  • Table 1 Likert items (physical health, craving, abstinence confidence, religion/spirituality, family arguments, recovery satisfaction) stay on Table 1's 0-4 scale. This tool does not apply the later VA BAM-R 0/8/15/22/30 recode, so Risk is 0-102 and Protective is 0-98 rather than 0-180.
  • Items 7a-g and 17 are collected and are not included in the three subscale sums. Table 1 notes a 6-category drug checklist without naming the categories; 7a-g follow the VA public-domain slots.

Formula

Use = days_alcohol + days_heavy_alcohol + days_drug (Cacciola 2013 Table 1 items 4+5+6; each 0-30; max 90); Risk = physical_health + days_sleep + days_psychological + craving + days_risky + family_arguments (items 1+2+3+8+11+15; Table 1 Likert 0-4 kept on Table 1's own scale, day-counts 0-30; max 102); Protective = abstinence_confidence + days_self_help + religion_support + days_structured + adequate_income + days_supportive (items 9+10+12+13+14+16; Table 1 Likert 0-4, day-counts 0-30, income No=0 Yes=30; max 98); items 7a-g and 17 collected and not summed. No single total BAM score. magent does not interview the patient. Not a diagnosis or level-of-care order.

  2. Use = 0+0+0 = 0 (max 90); Risk = 0+0+0+0+0+0 = 0 (max 102); Protective = 0+0+0+0+0+0 = 0 (max 98)

Use items at 30 days

Given: abstinence_confidence=0adequate_income=falsecraving=0days_alcohol=30days_drug=30days_heavy_alcohol=30days_psychological=0days_risky=0days_self_help=0days_sleep=0days_structured=0days_supportive=0drug_cocaine=falsedrug_inhalants=falsedrug_marijuana=falsedrug_opiates=falsedrug_other=falsedrug_sedatives=falsedrug_stimulants=falsefamily_arguments=0physical_health=0recovery_satisfaction=0religion_support=0

  1. days_alcohol 30 + days_heavy_alcohol 30 + days_drug 30; remaining Table 1 items at the floor example
  2. Use = 90 (max 90); Risk 0; Protective 0. Not a diagnosis or level-of-care order.

Bulk (POST)

POST the same path with a JSON items array. The first item is the GET unit; each additional item is $0.002. Invalid items return HTTP 400 before settlement.

POST /api/calc/bam Max 25 unit_amount + extra_item_amount * (n - 1) extra $0.002 PREVIEW

  • 1 to 25 items. Each item uses the same keys as the GET query parameters.
  • POST of 1 item costs the same as GET. Lists longer than 25: chunk into multiple POSTs. Extra items still execute; do not pad dummy rows.
  • The first invalid item fails the whole request (index in the 400 JSON). You are not charged.
  • HTTP 200 is {count, path, items}. Each items[i] is the GET 200 body for that row.
  • Catalog misses (empty matches, found=false) stay paid 200s inside that slot.
  • x402 resource URL is this path plus n and body_sha256. Browsers that prefer text/html get the same paywall as GET; Pay retries POST with the same items.

Client errors (HTTP 400)

Invalid params return 400 without charge. Shared HTTP 402 and 503 meanings: Payments.

HTTP Code When
400 invalid_bam BAM inputs must match Cacciola 2013 Brief Addiction Monitor item ranges from that paper. Returned before settlement; you are not charged.
400 invalid_items POST body must be a JSON object with only an items array Returned before settlement; you are not charged.
400 invalid_item_count items must be an array of 1 to 25 objects Returned before settlement; you are not charged.
400 invalid_item each items entry must be a JSON object Returned before settlement; you are not charged.

Related tools

  • CAGE — Sum the four Ewing 1984 CAGE items and return whether two or more answers are affirmative.
  • AUDIT-C — Sum three caller-assigned Bush 1998 AUDIT-C integers (0-4) and return this paper's ≥3 and ≥4 screens.
  • CIWA-Ar — Sum the ten Sullivan 1989 CIWA-Ar items (nine caller-assigned 0-7 plus orientation 0-4) and return the published total (max 67).

Payment

Unpaid requests return HTTP 402 even if query parameters or POST items are missing or invalid, so CDP and agents can index the path. After a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE, invalid params return HTTP 400 JSON before settlement. magent does not charge. Fix the params, then request a new 402 quote for that complete URL. Catalog misses (empty matches, found=false) are valid paid 200s. Unpaid valid requests return HTTP 402 with a base64 PAYMENT-REQUIRED header. HTTP 503 is not a new quote: retry the same PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. Full handshake and shared payment errors: Payments. Stdio MCP: /docs/mcp.

Guarantees

  • HTTP 402 is unpaid, including a missing query. After PAYMENT-SIGNATURE, invalid parameters return HTTP 400 before settlement. You are not charged. HTTP 402 never includes the tool JSON.
  • exact: settlement finishes before the tool (paymentFlow upfront). batch-settlement: verify/deposit before the tool; chargedCumulativeAmount commits after HTTP 2xx. Uncertain or failed settlement fails closed (HTTP 503). Retry the same PAYMENT-SIGNATURE.
  • HTTP 402 is unpaid only. Do not sign a second authorization because of a 503.
  • Execution is timeout-bounded and concurrency-capped.
  • Calculator inputs are stored encrypted for allowlisted operators (Magent Console). They are not in public logs, SSH lookups, catalog, or rollups. Request logs store path without query.
